La principale novità è stata l’allargamento delle quattro categorie più importanti (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year e Best New Artist) a otto candidati, contro i cinque delle edizioni precedenti, con l’obiettivo di rappresentare il maggior numero di generi musicali possibile nelle nomination.
